...to some Americans about the game. Thought that maybe we could have a nice chat about a game which was a win-win for both, and in which both sides didn't really play that well. Boy, was I naive! Didn't expect that much hatred mixed with poor understanding of this sport.

Hey Klaus, don't let it bother you too much. Most of us are pretty nice, but we do tend to be sore losers. Also, as a nation, we're still finding our place in the game. I'm just glad we are able to move on and that soccer/football/futbol is getting more coverage than ever before over here. By the way... I hate our goalie!

Germany played pretty well I thought. The USA defense was really smothering, and Howard was a beast in the net.

Our midfield sucked though. That's why the Germans were at such an advantage. We were also lucky that Ozil sucked today because along with Muller and Mertesacker, I think he's the best player on the team

Özil sucked today? He has like a bad month or a bad several months or something. I applaud Löw that he still lets him play as a pick-me-up, as we will need a good Özil at his full strength later on. But right now? He is just a sorry excuse for himself. He's a good guy, and he CAN be a magic little wizard who can turn a game around. It's just that he seems to be in some kind of whole right now. With every game, the commenters are like "He did better than before." It's just not enough.

But seriously! The Germans were good-ish, but they played with the handbrake on. They knew that they were through (bar any unreal happenings) and they didn't want to get any unwanted yellow cards or even hurt a key player. The US team showed superb defense. Klinsmann watched the GER-POR game and wanted to avoid a beating like that. Which was a clever move.

Honestly, as good as Germany has been historically, and as tough as this group was expected to be, we tied 1-0 today to advance.

And this wasn't even THAT dirty. Jones and Bekerman?... the dreadlock-guy... were really asking for it, but the Ref was a good sportsman, and all is well. At least for our teams. I think that Ghana would have been a worthy team to move on as well.

Wise move. Unfortunately for me I'm about as versed in the world of football of either sort (insert joke about difference between the two or don't depending on the varying levels of cynicism of the surrounding public) and engaging in further discussion of the aforementioned game would be impossible for me. However, I wish all those participating, spectating, and refereeing a good time, within reason?

Part of the problem is the US' recent attraction to the sport. They know enough to be dangerous, but know little about the international audience or the politics. This is not New York vs Boston.
